Behavior modification techniques are valuable tools for teachers to create a supportive learning environment and promote positive behaviors. One of these techniques is;
1. Effective Questioning:
When interacting with children, it's important to ask questions. In fact, the learning environment should be sprinkled with questions. However, instead of asking unnecessary questions or offering unnecessary choices, use strategic questioning to give them a sense of autonomy while still maintaining control.
For example, rather than asking:
"Do you want to learn your sounds today?"❌ (which may be answered with a 'no')
Ask,
"Do you want to start with sounds or numeracy?"✅.
This approach allows the child to feel more in control while still following your guidance.
Kindly note that, you ask questions on things that do not matter. It does not matter whether the child starts with numeracy or sounds. What matters is that the child must learn the two subjects. Asking the question only makes the child feel like he/she has a choice, but in the real sense, you are in control.
This effective questioning technique extends beyond the classroom and can be applied in various everyday situations.
2: Reinforcement:
Reinforcement is a fundamental concept in behavior modification and learning theory that is aimed at maintaining or increasing a specific behavior. It can be either positive or negative.
I once had to teach a group of students with intellectual disabilities, and I arrived unusually late that day. I knew their limited attention span would make it difficult to learn considering the time I arrived. However, I needed to engage them. So, I used positive reinforcement to motivate them by leveraging on their love for hugs. I've observed they love greeting me with hugs, and I used this to my advantage by promising a hug in exchange for good behavior.
This small incentive worked wonders. The power of positive Reinforcement (Hug) transformed our class into a productive and interesting lesson. I didn't need to stress myself too much to keep them focused, the reinforcer (hugs) did the trick.
As teachers and parents, reinforcement is a vital technique to adopt when working with children to foster positive behavior and encourage learning.
